Description
Skin cancer is the world's most common cancer. It's also the most preventable. Yet one person dies from it every four minutes.
Daily sun protection habits, improved detection, and access to treatment could save thousands of American lives every year.
The CDC reports that outdoor workers face a significantly higher risk of skin cancer—up to 10 times more UV exposure than indoor workers—due to chronic sun exposure.
Melanoma accounts for approximately one in five skin cancers globally, with 325,000 new melanoma cases and 57,000 deaths each year.
Over one million Americans are living with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and over 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer were detected in the United States last year.
The annual cost of treating skin cancers in the U.S. is estimated at $8.1 billion.
Almost all cases of skin cancer are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. That represents an urgent wake-up call about how we reframe our relationship with the sun.
The story of skin cancer lends itself to fascinating storytelling opportunities. Conquering Skin Cancer is about our relationship with the sun, our environment, and climate change.
The film takes the audience on a journey of discovery that will open their eyes to what it means to live safely in a high-UV environment today.
Conquering Skin Cancer includes high-profile participants, including Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman, author Mary Elizabeth Williams, Texas Hall of Fame Golfer Mike Booker, and Ultimate Frisbee Champion Elena Schwam. It also features leading expert voices, including Prof Boris Lushniak (Dean of Public Health, University of Maryland, and former Acting Surgeon General of the United States), Prof Jeff Gershenwald (MD Anderson), Prof Susan Swetter (Stanford), Prof Allan Halpern (Memorial Sloan Kettering), and Dr Michelle Henry (celebrity dermatologist).
